MARY, MARTHA, AND UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
Who are the Mary's and Martha's of United Methodist Women? Let's look at the lives of these two women.
First, we have Martha, the welcoming one; she is the one who extends hospitality to everyone. She makes
sure there is plenty of food for everyone and a comfortable place to sit. She could be called the "great provider".
She's like many of us – working in soup kitchens, thrift shops, food pantries, and homeless and domestic
violence shelters. She's always busy doing for others, not only here at home, but internationally, too.
Now let's look at Mary – the listening, inquiring one. She's the one who sits at Jesus' feet and learns how
much God cares for people who are treated badly and unjustly. She's like the one who goes to Missions
Schools and other events to learn how to work for a better society for all.
Both Mary and Martha are giving women and we need both kinds to be a successful unit. Like them, the
United Methodist Women are giving women. We give of our time, talents, and resources.
There are many examples of United Methodist Women working for justice here in the United
States and around the world.
This is our unique calling – and joy.. Luke 6:38 says "Give away your life; you'll find life given
back, but not merely given back – given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting is the
way. Generosity begets generosity."
